Spreding your wings

Location changes and shooting in small spaces

Hello! I want to talk a little about shoot locations and how to use the space that is available vs. shooting in the space that you want.

There comes the bittersweet time in every parent’s life when our children spread their wings to fly on their own. It is a proud moment full of conflicting emotion. We are proud that they have grown into fine young men and women who are ready to begin their own path in life towards success and fulfillment. However, we are sad to see them go because we will miss them being with us. A flood of memories flashes through our minds. We recall their first steps, them losing that first tooth, the apprehensive first date, the joy of accomplishment and supporting them through the disappointment of their failures. Yes, it is bittersweet.

Leslie’s beautiful daughters were getting ready to blaze their own path in life and she wanted a portrait session of them while they were still together. We planned the session and selected a near by park for the location. However, on shoot day I adjusted the plan after taking a few shots in a small area of their yard while the stylists were finishing the makeovers. The shots looked really good. We decided it would be more comfortable to shoot there because of the number of outfit changes and being able to use their house for those changes.

Being flexible, at ease with change and having the ability to recognize opportunity is important. The change of location worked out very well as we had more time to shoot and the convenience of a comfortable changing room right there. It is not about how much space you have to work with, but rather how you work with the space that you have.
