Utah’s Red Canyon: Where the Stone Glows

Scenic Byway 12

After exploring the incredible landscapes of Utah, I found myself captivated by a lesser-known but equally stunning gem: Red Canyon. This beautiful stretch, which serves as the dramatic western gateway to Bryce Canyon National Park, immediately sets the stage for the Southwest’s unique beauty.

Driving through Red Canyon on Scenic Byway 12 is an experience in itself. The road carves right through the heart of magnificent red cliffs, and the contrast between the vibrant crimson formations and the deep green of the Ponderosa pines is breathtaking. If you love color and drama, Red Canyon offers an unforgettable visual welcome to Southern Utah.

The Magic of the Red Rock Spires

Red Canyon is part of the same geological structure as Bryce Canyon, showcasing the spectacular power of erosion. Here, the landscape features massive, eroded fins and thousands of smaller, intricately shaped stone towers that rise straight out of the forest floor.  The intensity of the rock color here is particularly striking. The deep red and pink hues come from iron oxide within the rock layers, which makes the landscape feel like it’s glowing, especially under the morning or evening sun.

  • Easy Access: Unlike its deeper canyon neighbors, Red Canyon features trails that are generally shorter and less strenuous. This makes it a perfect stop for quick, easy hikes that still offer close-up views of the rock spires.
  • Unique Formations: Look for the famous, massive red tunnels carved directly through the rock by the highway! They perfectly frame the surrounding scenery.

Bryce Canyon gets all the fame, but Red Canyon is a beautiful and accessible alternative. Geologists call the rocks that form these spires the Claron Formation. These are the same rocks found inside Bryce. Red Canyon feels different because the landscape is not one huge amphitheater. Instead, you see a collection of beautiful stone towers scattered among the dense forest. The area sits within the Dixie National Forest. This gives it a unique mix of high-desert red rock and cool Ponderosa pine trees. You will also notice the unique red tunnels cut through the rock. Workers blasted these tunnels out in 1905 to make way for the road. This created an unforgettable drive!

As a portrait photographer, I simply couldn’t resist the urge to include people within this spectacular, unique landscape. While I didn’t have time to set up a full session, I made sure to capture a few shots that demonstrate the incredible scale of the canyon. The beauty here is the main subject; the girl in the frame helps to emphasize the overwhelming size and drama of the crimson formations and towering rock spires around them. This landscape is the true star.
